Sourdough Toast Benefits - Easier Digestion
There are so many types of breads out there. White, whole wheat, rye, potato, brioche, sourdough and the list goes on! You may wonder if any is significantly beneficial than the others. Today I'll be sharing 3 benefits of sourdough!
1. Easier Digestion - sourdough bread is made by the fermentation of dough using naturally occurring lactobacilli and yeast. Lactobacillus is a probiotic that helps the body absorb nutrients and acts as good bacteria to keep your gut healthy. This may help with diarrhea, IBS or lactose intolerance!
2. Decreases phytic acid production - the presence of Lactobacillus decreases the amount of phytic acid production. Phytic acid binds to minerals such as magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc - which makes these minerals unavailable for us if present. The long fermentation process is what decreases the phytic acid.
3. Packed with vitamins - in addition to increased digestion, sourdough is also packed with many vitamins and minerals like other whole grain breads. Sourdough bread also contains higher levels of antioxidants and folate than other breads. The lower phytate levels allow your bodies to absorb the nutrients more easily.
Next time you decide on what bread to buy, pick sourdough! Making sourdough requires longer time than other breads to ferment and rise - creating its particular texture and taste.
