What is matcha and what are its key benefits?

WHAT IS MATCHA?
Matcha is a shade-grown all natural, powdered Japanese green tea made from the finest tea leaves. It is one of the most unique teas on the planet, obtaining its tremendous health properties through careful growing, cultivating and processing. Unlike other teas, Matcha undergoes a number of additional steps in the production cycle before it makes its way to your cup, including: shade growing, hand picking, stem and vein removal, and granite stone grinding into a fine powder.

100% BENEFIT FROM THE LEAF
Matcha powder is composed of finely stone ground green tea leaves, which means you receive 100% of the benefits of the whole tea leaf (antioxidants, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, etc.). To receive the same amount of health benefits found in Matcha, you would need to steep about 10 cups of green tea.

HIGH IN ANTIOXIDANTS
Matcha contains higher antioxidant levels on a per gram basis than any other known natural fruits or vegetables. ORAC test results show one gram of Ceremonial Matcha green tea contains 1,384 ORAC units (about 15x the antioxidants available in one gram of wild blueberries). 

NATURAL ENERGY BOOST
Matcha contains approximately half the caffeine found in coffee. High levels of the amino acid, L-theanine, allows for a stable 3-6 hour energy boost (without the crash). L-theanine works to slowly metabolize the natural caffeine found in tea leaves, resulting in a gradual release of energy over a longer period of time.

VERSATILE INGREDIENT
Besides daily drinking, Matcha’s powdered form and vibrant color makes it an ideal ingredient for cooking, baking, etc. We suggest using a culinary grade, which is specifically blended with a stronger green tea flavor so the Matcha flavor is not lost among other ingredients in the recipe.

SEE: Vibrant, jade green color

    • Due to increased amounts of chlorophyll from its shade-grown process

TASTE: Naturally smooth, sweet flavor with a hint of astringency

    • Sweetness stems from the L-theanine amino acids

AROMA: Hint of sweetness with earthy undertones 

TOUCH: Very fine consistency (5-10 microns; finer than baby powder); silky and smooth to the touch
